HOW MANY BOAT BRANDS ARE THERE?

 http://boatnutmagazine.com/

WHO'S WHO POWER BOAT MANUFACTURERS / WHAT BRAND SHOULD I BUY/ PT 2

There are several different groups of power boats in today's market. They include Fishing Boats, Utility Boats, Ski and Wakeboard, PWC, Pontoon, Cruisers and Yachts. Many of the manufacturers have product lines that stretch across all market needs, some even include Sail Boats. However are the boat builders who specialize in one portion of the market better than the builders who try to make the full spectrum. Yes they are these builders have a specific audience, they spend time and money on R and D to capture as many buyers in their niche as possible. These builders also understand the needs and demands that their boats will face (more market feedback and more real world testing).

MY RANT!

When builders start to stray away from their core line up and provide too many models the whole line suffers for it. A great example of this was Bayliner ( to broad a range to many brand names), and today it is Sea Ray a brand that has been known for its cruisers and yachts. When manufacturers like Brunswick start to buy up the competition the boats begin to share technology and become too much alike,(it will be interesting to see what happens to Chapperal) a comparative line to Sea Ray now owned by Brunswick. There are very few Cruiser and Runabout builders that really provide a unique design and boating experience. Chris Craft is one of those production (Production; means volume builders not custom) boat companies that has kept an independent brand design and experience, but your going to pay for it. Cobalt and Mariah market their boats as unique in design and they do have some tells but across the water can you immediately pick one out of a crowd? One disappointing fact is that most Power Boats and PWC are so similar in design its hard to tell them apart, if you took the name off the side and could you really tell them apart? There is nothing more mind numbing than buying a new boat and the only way you can pick yours out is the name on the back, as a technician for years I wandered many a dock trying to find a boat without a name to set it apart. Come on boat builders do we really need the same designs and colors over and over, lets see something that sets you apart from the crowd!!!!!

Who's Who?

Back to the subject at hand:

In 2011 there were 1394 boat builders registered with Manufacturer Identification Codes

Consider that there have been around 690 car builders around the world now and in the past.

As of 2011 a full 1/3 of the boat manufacturers who were listed in the Boat Value Book in Canada were out of production. You need a Play by Play book to keep track of the market. The interesting thing is that several of the manufacturers that are on this list that we associate with building cruisers are no longer in that segment. Two great examples are Carver and Wellcraft, Carver is only building five boats and they are all yachts. Wellcraft is a fishing boat line. Actually the fishing boats seem to rule the market.

This has to make you wonder how used cruiser values will be affected by this change. It is this type of shift and continuous market change that has created a place for Boat Nut. Names like Scarab are back but they are jet boats now, Scarab is a line of jet boats that were formerly Sea Doo a couple of years ago. Keeping track of where to get factory replacement parts and manuals will become a full time job. There are a lot of other manufacturers not on this list, however this list reflects the Power Boat market today, Boats are being built in Mexico (Bayliner), Europe (Mariaha) all over the world and imported back to us as the brands we recognize as North American. This along with the entry of Sail Boat builders who have introduced Power Boats. This will create some interesting service issues for owners and technicians who are not used to negative switching for example ( Jeannue Power Cat Yachts) . As we move forward into the future the Power Boat market is and will start to resemble the automotive industry. Boat systems will become a package, warranties will be virtually the same materials and designs similar, you will need to be more than brand loyal to buy a new boat. As the quality and prices amongst the top builders close in factors like ergonomics, ride quality and after purchase cost of ownership will become deciding factors in buying a boat. That is were Boat Nut comes in we will provide the best most accurate information for you the boater. We want you to enjoy your time on the water not stress over uninformed decisions that you will need to make.

BEING INFORMED IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER!

WE WILL MAKE A BOAT NUT OUT OF YOU

CAPTAIN O' CAPTAIN

http://boatnutmagazine.com/

CAPTAIN O CAPTAIN , HOW DO I KNOW ITS TRUE?

First let me ask why are all the boat experts referred to as captain? Is calling yourself a captain a self appointed arrogant way of saying I know boats, or is it to give you a warm and fuzzy feeling that they are telling you the facts. After all they must know something he/she is a captain. I personally hate being referred to as a captain, I spent over 40 years around boats, and always thought of a captain as someone who was responsible for the safe operation of a vessel. Someone who is an expert at charts and navigation. A captain would be the go to person for maritime laws and rules not necessarily the person to keep the vessel in tip top order, there is a crew for that. So I consider myself crew and not a captain.

SO WHAT MAKES ME SO SMART?

My phone rings everyday with questions about all matter of topics to do with maintenance, repair and opinions of all years makes and models of power boats. This is what I have discover opinions are like ass holes everyone has one! Most of the opinions are founded on self gain and sales, you call a company or expert and they are trying to figure out how to cash in. You are a potential cash cow, do they want to advise you or raid your wallet.............

I started this blog to provide the best information I could with the thought that over 30 years of international power boat repairs, operation and maintenance would be of value to you the boat owner. As there is little quality information and entertainment to do with power boating maybe I could grow this idea into something fun and truth full, not a every boat and boat product is the greatest thing you have ever seen. There are enough of those sites out there
.

So what makes me any different than any other so called expert? I feel I should explain my back ground and how I earned a degree from the Boat Nut University. I received my PHD in power boat repair from putting in Plenty of Hard Days. Making mistakes, learning and listening to the best  people the industry had and has to offer, these are not the advise givers they are the people who build and service boats around the world. Person's that boat builders rely on to fly to some little country where there are no supply stores and fix every issue big or small on any boat at a moments notice. We needed to be experts at every system of any size boat any model year. No fancy titles just able to do anything trouble shooters, providing a written account of why the part or system failed in the field, design a repair procedure for others to follow, and supply engineering with solutions to stop the failure on future models of the same or similar boats.  There where not many of us.

You had to be able to disassemble an entire boat in the field, as well as be a mechanic, upholstery, wood worker, electrician, plumber, fiberglass expert you name it. Back in the 80s and 90s we received certificates for each trade we mastered even receiving US Coast Guard certificates for fuel systems. But that's all gone now, new technicians are parts swappers, the best you can get is a service school diploma.

My client base included plenty of names you will recognize:

  • Sea Ray
  • Bayliner
  • Robalo
  • Wahoo
  • Boston Whaler
  • Trophy
  • Meridian
  • Maxum
  • Baja
  • Tiara
  • Ranger
  • Wellcraft
  • Prowler
  • Rinker
  • Hydra Sport
  • Astro/ Procraft
  • Campion
  • Thundercraft
  • Chris Craft
  • Trojan
  • Glasstron
  • Four Winns
  • Larson
  • Mastercraft
  • Lund
  • World Cat
  • Polar
  • Fountain
  • Cigerette
  • Doral
  • and many more custom and private boats
This variety of manufacturers and model years have provided a unique insight into power boats and how they have evolved over the last 35 plus years. I have repaired and operated all of the above boats, in all types of environments. These experiences coupled with the amazingly skilled people that I have had the pleasure of having as colleges and friends have prepared me to sit down and write honest, informative and entertaining information for you the boat owners.

Bayliners production Models from 1975- 2011

http://boatnutmagazine.com/

How many Bayliner models were made between 1975 and 2000?

Bayliner was at one time the largest pleasure boat builder in the world, and this is reflected in the quantity of models they built between 1975 and 2000. This is an interesting evolution of a manufacturer and how the industry has changed from the simple line in 1975 to the unbelievable list in 2001 where the number of models in production begins to fall off.

In 1975 Bayliner had 8 models in their line up, the 1700 mutiny, a 2150 Liberty Cuddy, 2- 2250 Santiago models, 2350 Nisqually bridge, 2550 Saratoga, 2750 Victorian bridge, and a 3050 Encounter Bridge. That is it, the 1975 line up for you with the largest boat a 30 ft bridge boat, my how things have changed.

In 1977 Bayliner adds three more models another 2350 Nisqually Express, 2750 second Victorian and a 4050 Bodega . The Bodega is the first Bayliner over 30 foot. This is the start year for what we know as the Bayliner Yacht line, (which has continued on in the Meridian Yachts).

Every year from this point forward there are going to be serious changes to the line up:

Boat Service and Service Plans

http://boatnutmagazine.com/

Develop a Service Plan

Do you really want to have boat ownership that can be budgeted? It can be done. Do not wait for something to break down, set up a service plan. This is done on much larger yachts however this idea has not trickled down to smaller pleasure boats, and I am not sure why. It makes so much sense rather than face big winterizing bills and spring start up bills every year, you should design an annual service program. We suggest you set out an annual arraignment with your service provider. This program will allow you pay an equal amount each month, based on the service provider scheduling regular visits to service your boat. You would provide a list of services based on the hours of operation put on the boat and the trips you may have planned. These service visits are scheduled for each month, quarterly and annually. This not only benefit's the boater as you can create a budget for planned ownership, but the technician will have a year round income so he/she can plan tools, parts purchases, and staff.

The boat owner has the advantage in this negotiation:

1-The boater can negotiate the requested service to cover items you may normally do to save cash.
2-Get the best rate as you are committing to a full year of service at a time.
3-Purchase annual parts when you can buy them for the best prices.
4- Not face large bills at the end or beginning of the season, and reduce the risk of break down.
5- Hold the value of the boat as you can provide a service history, knowing that someone is keeping an eye on the boat at all times is a big selling point for buyers and security for yourself.
6- Preventative maintenance goes a long way to keep up value and reliability.
7- Boat owners can create a package which provides you with a cruise kit, every boater should have a cruise kit. This is a supply of parts that represents the standard list of components that are used regularly for service and breakdown. You can store this kit on the boat or bring it with you if you cruise long distance. A decent cruise kit will add value to your boat at the time of sale.

As a boat owner you need to think about it this way for example if it costs you $3500.00 over a year this will convert to $292.00 per month, instead of seasonal hits and worrying about arraignment of service when you need it. You will also build a relationship with your service provider and your service provider with your boat. If your service provider is in your marina you can create a service plan which includes having the boat checked on in the case of weather or just a general check on a routine basis. Watching for loose lines, unauthorized entry or loose canvas for example. I am not sure why more boaters have not got together and set this up for groups of boats, if you and several of your neighboring boats use the same service provider then this program will be even easier to establish.

You will need to create or have a service plan put together for your boat based on the propulsion configuration, the accessories on your boat, where your boat is moored, and the hours of use. Once you have all of this information then you must determine the recommended maintenance that all of these items require each year. This can be determined in most cases from access to published flat rate manuals, or from the manuals that you should have received when you purchased the boat. Establishing a service plan may take a little work but it will pay dividends for you the boat owner, you will be able to determine over all cost of owner ship (if you plug in the numbers of marina fees). If you are planning to buy a boat, and you take the time to complete a service plan you will be able to accurately determine the annual cost of ownership. I have seen a lot of boats sold when new boaters buy a boat and are shocked by the cost of ownership, this is why so many boats fall into disrepair or are not used. If you have put a service plan together be sure your insurance company is aware, this way if you have a claim the question of lack of maintenance by the boat owner is not questioned. This program will not stop major break downs however regular service should catch these types of failures before they happen, there are usually always signs of impending break downs.

Boat Nut is designing a down load of a service plan outline, you will only need to enter the details to calculate ownership costs and provide recommended details to develop the best service plan for your boat.  You will be able to use this completed information to calculate the annual costs of a boat before you buy it or create a plan with your service provider. The download will also outline the information you should be asking for from your service provider to be sure that you have selected the correct provider for your needs. Do not assume that the marina or facility that you are using is screening service providers to be sure you sure protected. Also do not assume that if you are in a closed marina where you are having to deal with specific service providers that they are the service providers that they are the right for you or your boat. I personally disagree with closed yards, I believe that forcing relationships never works out well, you as the boat owner should be able to contact any service provider who can meet the criteria standard in the industry.

When you purchase a new used boat it is very important to consider that the service you are receiving is within the parameters of your warranty requirements. quite often you will need to have the technician to sign off that he/she has completed the required service to the standard required and used the correct materials. The technician who signs off should be able to demonstrate that they are trained with a manufacturers certificate related to your service requirements. This will eliminate any questions should you need to process a claim for a failed component. These are the certificates that you see on the walls when you are in your service providers office. If the incorrect products or fluids are not used or you fail to keep up your service requirements than you run the risk of a rejected claim. When you consider the value of many of these components and the fact that you are probably paying for extended warranties, correct service is a necessity,  Establishing a sound service plan will save you head ache and dollars, and in the process you should have a boat with the highest reliability and a side line, you will be maintaining the highest resale value of the boat you own.
