Mercury Marine wins Innovation Prize of Propulsion System Award at China International Boat Show

Mercury Marine wins Innovation Prize of Propulsion System Award at China International Boat Show

Mercury Marine was recently honored with the Innovation Prize of Propulsion System award at the China (Zhoushan Archipelago) International Boat Show for its 350hp Verado outboard engine.  The judges, who were comprised of show organizers and members of the industry media, noted that the engine won the award because of its powerful performance, outstanding stability at high speed, as well as compact & intelligent design for unmatched driving experience.
The award is the second major award for Mercury Marine in Asia in 2015.  Mercury won its second consecutive “Most Eco-Friendly Marine Business Award” during the 2015 China (Shanghai) International Boat Show for its 75-115hp FourStroke Outboard Engine platform.
“Winning the Innovation Prize of Propulsion System award in Asia is a great honor for Mercury Marine,” said Randy Caruana, Mercury Marine vice president - North & Central America and Asia Pacific.  “The Asia Pacific market quickly adopted the Verado family of engines and use it in recreational, commercial and especially government marine applications.  The customer feedback regarding the 350 Verado in the government program in Asia has been very positive.”
The Zhoushan Archipelago Boat Show has been held since 2011 with the support of local government and the marine industry association.  Zhoushan Archipelago was recently positioned as a national sea-fishing base.

China

Overview

China represents a large and untapped market for the pleasure yachting industry. Yachting is predicted to become a popular recreational activity and will expand rapidly in the coming years. The 2009–10 China Yachting Industry Report, released by the China Communication and Transportation Association (CCTA) Cruise & Yacht Industry Sub-association, claims that China has entered a post-auto era and with a rising middle-class and that the yachting industry will experience rapid growth. The main restriction on this growth is the 43 percent tax on imported yachts. The market will grow first through yacht rentals as a large section China’s growing middle class cannot yet afford to purchase high-end luxury boats. Additionally, the Chinese government is working at various administrative levels to foster yachting as a complement to tourism.

Meanwhile, the Chinese central government has declared that Hainan Island in South China will be developed as an International Tourism Destination, a positive step for the yachting industry.

These recent policy developments by the Chinese government will have a direct impact on the Chinese yacht industry. The Chinese yacht economy will gradually improve as the yacht industry becomes more familiar to the Chinese market.

In 2012, the Chinese yacht market was about CNY 1.75 billion (USD 282 million) with an annual growth rate of about 10 percent. The market shows bright prospects; yacht sport will become a major choice for entertainment for the rising Chinese middle class. Marine yacht sport will be a new highlight in marine tourism and individualized consumption.

Currently China has 57 officially registered yacht clubs and marinas with around 600 berths. They are mainly concentrated in Yangzi River Delta and accounted 42 percent of the national total. The high-end and luxurious clubs are mainly located in Guangdong and Hainan. The widespread marina projects taking place in China signal the future advancement of the industry.

Mercury Marine hosts 9th annual Changzhou Seminar in China

Mercury Marine recently hosted the 9th annual Changzhou Seminar, an event dedicated to educating boat makers and customers about the latest information relating to product & service, business development strategy and how to support OEM boat builders and end-users in 2016 and beyond.
Close to 30 OEM boat builders took part in the two-day event which was supported by one of Mercury’s largest Asian dealers, Changzhou Hongwei (CZHW).  One of the main goals of the event was to strategize on how to grow the overall commercial market over the next few years.
“Communicating our business plan and introducing new products is a great way to help our customers better understand the Mercury strategy and give them the tools they need to sell product,” said Bill McEathron, Mercury Marine general manager of Asia Pacific. “It’s no secret that the commercial market overall is down in China right now, and we will work together with our boat builder partners and dealers to get a better understand of the business landscape and work together to increase share.”
Some of the products introduced during the seminar were the 350hp Verado and 400R outboard engine as well as the commercial Sea Pro line of 75-150hp outboard engines which are designed for the commercial market.  Attwood, one of Mercury Marine’s P&A companies, also presented its business goals and products at the seminar.
