RANT TO BOAT REVIEWERS AND BOATING MAGAZINES
I recently picked up three publications at the Toronto Boat Show, they are glossy magazines that seem to be the standard. they have covers which include pictures and teasers that would have you believe that they can provide the necessary information to guide your decisions on every thing from a boat purchase to marinas and destinations. I am not a cynical boater nor do I hate the industry on a whole but these publications are more marketing than usable facts for myself or any boater. Print catalogues are free at any dealer! This industry has always been thought of as small. Worse than that regions of the world are considered not worth the trouble to support. Really! boaters in say Canada do not justify the type of education and support of their US neighbors, that's bull shit, we bought your products also. You took are money, there are no second rate boaters, just boaters! This was a small industry true. But its growing in ways that no one ever saw coming, Due in most part to dealers like OYLMPIC BOAT CENTER and MARINE MAX who truly brought the idea of boat ownership and sold the lifestyle to the masses. It was not the Power Squadron or Discover Boating who grew the boating market it was a hand full of smart people at the dealer level who seen every driveway as a place to park a boat. The bursting out of the small boat market then pushed forward the big boat market. The introduction of new blood into the boating market is what really light the fuse, these boaters traded up, sometimes more than once a year, and quite often bought the wrong boat at least once.
Boat builders in the 90's capitalized on this buy introducing a landslide of starter boats into the market. Boats to meet every need! Why do you think PWC's are crushing the market now? The dealers and builders have the same mind sense (and they have a product to do it), not overly complicated and just the right size for you to place in a driveway. No marina bull to deal with just fun on the water at a price that any man can afford.
Getting back to the magazines, a boat buyers guide that only lists a percentage of the manufacturers suggested retail prices, Reviews that are nothing but an ad for the dealer or builder with no practical information about the boats. A destination line up that is so far from a boaters reality its not even funny. I mean how many of us travel for days or weeks at time from on port to another covering massive miles and hours. Sure there are some boaters who do this but not many. Most of us are day trippers who put less than 40 hours a year on the motors. I need to know since when did a competent staff become an amenity of a marina , and if it has doesn't that set off any alarm bells with anyone who is a boater.
Todays boats are more complex and untested than ever before. This is not the car industry people, as a matter of fact every product we buy now has been pushed to market. If you are going to invest north of thirty thousand on a product should not the reviews and information in the media be a little more serious about the are information they provide the masses. I know that in any industry getting accurate information to potential buyers can be risky, but only for those who over sell there products. This industry needs to review were it is at! When it comes to service, control and reviews of boats and accessories. Not every boat or boating related product is a gem. Ask anyone who is buying a second or third or fourth boat.
I have no intention on advising any one who is currently publishing or providing content to boaters on the net or in any other media. But you are too interested in providing another marketing tool to boat builders or simply do not know what the hell you are talking about. You are not providing the type of information that really applies to boaters once they are cut loose into the world on their own. Boat Nut Media may not hit a home run with the industry yet! but our numbers show we have tapped into a larger number of boaters than some of the big boating publications have, and we intend to keep growing!
